The Basics Of Visiting Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres, Mexico:
Nestled in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea Isla Mujeres is a small island off the coast of Cancun, Mexico. This beautiful place is famous for their white soft sandy beaches and an abundance of beach clubs. Beneath the turquoise blue waters a vibrant marine life exists. Once a hidden gem this thriving island off the coast of Cancun is a must see destination for travellers looking to escape the crowds of the bigger and busier hotel zone in Cancun. Come immerse yourself in Isla’s natural tropical beauty.
Getting to Isla Mujeres:
Once you land in Cancun, book a transport (I recommend CARM or Happy Transports.) They will take you to the ferry in Puerto Juarez. Getting to Isla is a very easy adventure across the bay. There are a couple ferry companies to choose from but the main ferry is the Ultramar. They have a schedule of every 30 minutes during the course of the day.
Once on the island you can rent a golf cart, scooter, bicycle or just walk around to explore. There are also taxis and now a bus that has set routes and schedules to take you around the island.
The most popular are the golf carts which will allow you to explore the whole island on your own schedule. You can rent them by the day, week or have a tour from one of the great island golf cart tour companies.
Playa Norte:
Translated to “North Beach”, Playa Norte is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico. Featuring soft white sand, shallow crystal clear turquoise waters, and swaying palm trees, it is the perfect place for your vacation baech days. You have your choice of throwing down your own beach blanket and bringing your own beverage and food of your choice, or you can choose from the many beach clubs with lounge chairs, umbrellas, food and your choice of beverages. Check before grabbing that lounge chair with the beach club you are at to see what their prices are. Some will charge for renting their chairs and food is separate while others the price of chairs goes towards your consumption. Don’t get caught off guard, just ask before picking that perfect spot.
Snorkel and diving:
There are several places you can shore snorkel for free or minimal pricing, or you have the option of booking a tour that will take you to various spots around the island. MUSA is the underwater museum where there are over 500 submerged sculptures designed to promote growth for the marine life ecosystem that should not be missed if you have the opportunity to check it out. Additionally you can go and rent gear from Garrafon de Castilla, not to be confused with Garrafon Park. Which is also a great spot for snorkeling, kayaking, zip lining, and paddle boarding.
Visit Punta Sur and Garrafon Natural reef:
At the southern tip of the island, you’ll find Punta Sur, the eastern most point of Mexico and the first place in the country to welcome the rising sun. This stunning coastal spot offers breathtaking ocean views, dramatic cliffs, and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for exploration.
Wander through the eco-park, where you’ll discover artistic sculptures, remnants of an ancient Mayan temple dedicated to Ixchel (the goddess of the moon and fertility), and pathways that lead to scenic overlooks. Along the way, you’ll find winding trails, native wildlife, and the sound of waves crashing against the rocky shore.
Whether you’re here for the sunrise, the history, or simply to take in the beauty of the Caribbean, Punta Sur is a must-visit destination on the island.
Swim with whale sharks:
During the months of May through September Isla Mujeres becomes one of the best places in the world to swim alongside the gentle whale sharks. These massive creatures migrate to the waters near the island to feed on plankton rich waters, providing an unforgettable wildlife encounter. An experience you will never forget.
Explore the town and local culture:
When in “Centro”, the center part of the island, the focal point is the main street, Hildago. The street is full of colorful and charming shops, restaurants and of course bars where you can experience the magic of Hildogo at night.
A pedestrian only street full of all these amazing sights and sounds, plus the welcoming hospitality of the locals.
Where to stay:
Isla Mujeres has so many diverse options for where to stay. Your options include hotels, the All Inclusives and boutiques, AirBnB’s as well as large ocean view houses along the Caribbean. Whatever you are looking for you will be sure to find a place that fits on Isla Mujeres.
I will have a separate blog about specific locations I have personally experienced and recommend.
Best time to visit:
Is there a bad time to visit a tropical island???? For real, the best months to visit Isla Mujeres would be November, following hurricane season, through until April. This period is when the temperature ranges from low 80’s during the day low 70’s at night, In other words just about as perfect as tempteratures can get. During the summer months it becomes very hot and humid and the water is very warm with temperatures reaching the upper 80’s to 90’s.
However if you are budget minded, the slower seasons will be significantly cheaper in price than that of high season. Plus if you prefer less crowds and a quieter time the summer is the perfect time to visit.
Final thoughts:
Isla Mujeres is a slice of Paradise and has captured my heart since my first visit over ten years ago. While it has grown and changed over the years, its stunning natural beauty and the wonderful people hold a special place in my heart.
There’s so much this little island has to offer, its a beautiful place that Im sure will leave you wanting to return again and again.
